Job Fair

The CCAC South Campus will be hosting a job fair on Wednesday, February 29^th from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. The job fair is free and is open to all members of the community. Some of the employers who will be on site include Dollar Bank, Home Instead Senior Care, Levin Furniture and Verizon Wireless. The CCAC South Campus is located at

Going Places Network

Dress For Success’s Going Places Network will begin a 6 week program on March 12^th and now is the time to register for it. The Going Places Network is a program sponsored by Wal Mart that helps with job preparation for the unemployed and underemployed. The weekly meetings are held on Mondays from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at the Dress for Success office located downtown.. Dress for Success will provide transportation, a light breakfast and lunch, an interview suit and connections to local employers. Pardon Me Clinic

Next week the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will hold a Pardon Me Clinic, a Formerly Convicted Citizens Project. The Pardon Me Clinic is intended to help those who were formerly convicted, and no longer on probation or parole, with a second chance at employment opportunities through the Governor’s Pardon Process. August Wilson Readings

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture is holding FREE round table readings of work by Pittsburgh native, August Wilson. These readings take place on the first Monday of every month; at 7:00 pm. The reading series feature the plays of Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson, along with works by new and upcoming playwrights. Skywatch

On Friday evenings, weather permitting, the Carnegie Science Center offers $1 admission to their Observatory Skywatch. Expert star gazers are on hand to help see some spectacular views of outer space through their telescope and to give information on the stars, nebulas and planets. SNAP Program

Auberle is now offering their award winning SNAP program to girls as well as boys. If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 6 and 11 years old who is having difficulty at home or in school with defiance, lying, fighting or intense anger, they may be eligible to participate in this FREE program. SNAP (Stop Now And Plan) is a program designed to help at-risk youth to create a successful future by dealing with their anger. Affordable Internet Service

Comcast is now offering a way in which customers can get internet in their homes for just $9.95 a month if they have at least one child receiving free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program. Other criteria for this offer include not having subscribed to Comcast internet service within the last 90 days, and not having an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment. If you, or someone you know, meets this criteria call 1-855-8-INTERNET, that’s 1-855-8-I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T. An application will be mailed out that will need to be returned with lunch program documents from the child’s school.

Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program

The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP) was created to provide emergency mortgage assistance to homeowners who are temporarily and involuntarily unemployed or underemployed due to the economy or a medical condition and are at risk of foreclosure. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act provided $1 billion to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to develop EHLP.

The Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program (EHLP) can provide eligible homeowners with a 0% interest, forgivable loan that pays past-due mortgage payments (principal, interest, taxes, insurance, attorney fees), as well as a portion of the homeowner’s monthly mortgage payment for up to 24 consecutive months, or up to $50,000, whichever comes first, and provided that certain eligibility requirements are maintained.

The first step is to get a copy of the Pre-Applicant Screening Worksheet. Worksheets are available online at http://www.findehlp.org/ as well as from nonprofit housing counseling agencies participating in the EHLP program. You can submit the completed worksheet to an EHLP counseling agency in person, via fax or email. The deadline for worksheet submission is July 22, 2011.

Assurance Wireless has recently announced free cell phone service for Pennsylvania residents. Assurance Wireless, similar to Safelink, provides free wireless cell phone service with no contracts and provides users 250 minutes to use each month. You may qualify for this free cell phone based on your household income, if you’re on Medicaid or participate in other government programs. These free cell phone services are great to use in conjunction with your Community Voice Mail, so you can have ease of access in checking your messages.

Did you know that Neighborhood Legal Services now has a Community Reentry Project that is providing help for people experiencing problems as a result of a criminal record?

Neighborhood Legal Services is helping people who:

Have errors on their rap sheet
Would like criminal charges or summary offenses expunged
Would like to apply for a pardon of a conviction or guilty plea
Need help getting their driver’s license restored
Need help with custody, visitation or child support issues
Have been denied food stamps, SSI or public housing

Did you know you might be eligible to receive a free mammogram???

If you are a woman without insurance or your co-pay makes it difficult for you to access health care, you may be eligible to receive a free mammogram at Allegheny General Hospital. AGH, in partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, are now providing free mammograms to women with limited resources. Free House Cleaning for Chemo Patients

If you are, or know a woman who is, undergoing Chemotherapy there is a free cleaning service out there to help. All the patient has to do is have her doctor fax a later stating she is going through the treatment and a local participating maid service will come and clean her home once a month for four months absolutely free! To assist you in checking your messages Travelers Aid has opened a phone in each of their offices for you to use if and when you are downtown. The phones will only be available to check your Community Voice Mail messages, and not for personal usage. If you would like to use a phone in one of these offices you must identify yourself as a Community Voice Mail client; it would be great if you could show your wallet card. The following are the days and times that you will be permitted to use the phones in each office.
